In a small workshop in Mulanthuruthy, Kerala, something extraordinary is happening. Amid the hum of machines and the scent of carved wood, a group of differently-abled artisans is proving that true creativity knows no limits. At the heart of this inspiring story is Jolly Joseph, a wheelchair user and visionary behind Kriya — a social enterprise that’s turning wood into art, and lives into legacies.
🔨 What is Kriya?
Kriya is the creative arm of Takshan Creatives, and more than just a business — it’s a mission. Jolly and his team, mostly people with physical disabilities, produce beautiful laser-engraved wood products: from personalized clocks and signs to promotional gifts and decor pieces.
“I wasn’t sure if I could do something on my own… but I wanted to create opportunities for people like me.” – Jolly Joseph
👥 Meet the Makers
- A small team of 6, including wheelchair users and one hearing-impaired artisan
- Each member handles design, cutting, engraving, and polishing
- Trained through organizations like Mutualism and Swayam
Among them is Umme M S, a carpenter and wheelchair user who beams with pride over every project completed.
🛤️ Jolly’s Journey: From Setback to Startup
Jolly was once a graphic designer working in Kochi before being diagnosed with spondylosis. Faced with physical limitations, he struggled with motivation until he found purpose through teaching design at Mutualism. This eventually led to the launch of Kriya in May this year.
🧰 Products Made with Passion
Kriya’s offerings include:
- Laser-cut clocks
- Custom wall art and mementos
- Corporate gifts and promotional items
- Personalized wooden signage
Each product tells a story — not just of design, but of resilience and dignity.
🚀 What’s Next for Kriya?
Jolly plans to take Kriya to the next level — expanding to e-commerce platforms and creating remote jobs for people with disabilities. “We hope to inspire others and show that if you can dream it, you can do it,” he says.

💬 Final Thoughts
Kriya is more than a brand — it’s a beacon of hope and ability. In a world that often underestimates people with disabilities, Jolly and his team are showing what’s possible — one handcrafted piece at a time.
